The fourth installment of the Grand Theft Auto franchise is its most successful installment to date. The series which has always been critically and commercially applauded nearly deserves a standing ovation with this one. The sandbox style game play that deftly switches between high octane driving and high adrenaline action is the stuff great games are made of. The game has consolidated the position of the franchise for several more sequels to follow.
GTA GAME REVIEW
The game is the first in a series of games that are to follow anyway; it belongs to the fourth generation of GTA which also contains San Andreas. This game is set in a city made up by the developers named as Liberty City (the Liberty alludes to New York a great deal). This is a classic tale of a person caught in the world of crime. The protagonist here is Niko Bellic who comes from Europe to fall in love with the American lifestyle. But, as chance may have it, he is pulled into a quagmire of everything that the American Dream isn’t about. The story follows his induction into the seedy world of gang wars and his rise therein.
The whole game is open game, which means you can reach from any point to any point in the game if you want to. There are no segments and the chapters just flow. This makes the game more interesting because you can always return to what you have missed out before.
There is something about gangster games that is very intriguing – their graphics are always intriguing. This can be said with much more feeling about Grand Theft Auto IV. The graphics make you positively drool. Liberty City is made to be a very lively city with the most minor of details and background events given attention to. You feel this is a city you are visiting in real life, not just playing.
Like all GTA games, the game play is divided into action as well as driving. Shooting is in the third person format and driving is as close to the real thing as it can be. The game deftly switches between the two, making fans of both genres feel quite appeased. Also, like the other GTA games the cheeky humor is all there. There is even a phone where you can fix dates with girls and such! Even when you are not actively pursuing a mission here, you do not feel bored because you can always check out such inclusions that have been smartly made in the game.
Character progression in games is not a new thing at all, but in GTA it really looks swankier. You get new cars, new clothes, flashier cell phones and it all becomes extremely interesting. There is just the right level of things doled out with each progression. With some games, you are given so little you feel cheated and with some others, you are given so much that you do not know what you must use. GTA IV has it just right.
The multiplayer version of the game is not as great as it could be but you are sure to have a smooth playing experience here too. All in all, this is a game that must not be missed for any reason whatsoever
